What's for dinner tonight?

What's for dinner tonight? Or, What do you want for dinner?
2 of the most hated questions in many parts of the world. I do try to be politically correct since there are countries where no food is available and I wouldn't want them to feel bad. Then again, they probably don't read my blog.
I ask one of the questions every day and every day I get the same answer. "I don't care."
Which is a perfectly fine answer, but then why do I care so much about dinner? Maybe because I grew up in a family where we had dinner every night. Like, meat, potatoes, gravy, real dinner kind of stuff.
We don't have that. Sometimes we have real dinner and many times we don't. Then we have omelettes (cinnamon is a favorite), cereal (I call it gourmet if it has raisins) or maybe some soup out of a can (the perfect place for soup).
I dream of slaving away in the kitchen all day. Of creating the perfect meal, sitting down and being met with oohs and aaahs and feeling like I accomplished equally important as saving the World. It doesn't happen. Don't get me wrong, the fam likes the food, but it's usually eaten in less than 10 minutes and then it takes a whole hour to clean it up.
I get asked one of the questions daily. And most days I say, "I don't know." Problem is the question is usually asked 30 minutes before dinnertime (which is 6 pm and always will be 6 pm), and I have been so busy with my hectic life (that's sarcastic, I don't have a job, but I thought it sounded important) that I haven't thought of anything yet. And that's how we end up with gourmet cereal, cinnamon omelettes (they really are very good) or maybe some soup out of a can (again, the perfect place for soup.)
I'm the only one who is bothered by these kind of dinners. They make me feel like an inadequate mother and how stupid is that!! How many women out there are truly inadequate mothers? Many, and they drink and do drugs and beat up their kids, husbands, lovers and probably the dog too. And I worry about dinner!
It has to stop.
Starting right now, I am entering the MWSFGANCDEN group and I will introduce myself: "Hi, I'm Katrine and I am a Mother Who Shouldn't Feel Guilty About Not Cooking Dinner Every Night."
And now you should say, "Hi Katrine".
Have a good day and by the way, we're having roast tonight.

LOL sounds just like my house. :) They could care less, I consider cooking, then decide to just make it easy so I don't get mad when they decide it's just "ok" or it's fine. Then all the clean up. I shall never be a gourmet chef.
Enjoy your roast.
Miss you.

Hi Katrine!

I'll stand beside you and say "Hi, I'm Susan and I am a Mother Who Shouldn't Feel Guilty About Not Cooking Dinner Every Night."

Luckily we live 5 minutes from a Safeway, and it's easy to go and get some bread, some fruit, a soup in a can (I agree, perfect place for soup).

The menu in our house is sandwiches, cold or warm, frikadeller, couscous salad, grilled chicken, roasted chicken (when I think about dinner before 5:30pm), and soups .. oh a probably a few things else that I cannot remember right now.

I have begged my family to make a weekend plan for dinner, because I do not mind making dinner everyday but I hate that I also have to be the one to come up with what dinner should be.
